Christmas Basket Program …

% This is the last week to choose a gift for the Christmas Basket Program. Stop by the Cry Room on your way out of Mass today and make your selection. Members of the Community Affairs Committee will be available to assist you and answer questions. Please return your gifts no later than December 7. This return date is crucial to being able to deliver to families in a timely fashion. Please, return your gifts no later than December 7.

% Donations made to the Poor Box during November and December will benefit the Christmas Basket Program.

Christmas trees & wreaths for sale …

Come now to get your beautiful, freshly cut NH tree from the Knights of Columbus at the Lukoil station on route 102 across from Dunkin Donuts. Tree prices start at $35-$40; there will also be a good selection of premium 9-10 ft trees for more, priced by the foot. A few smaller trees, including some of the “Charlie Brown” size, will be available for $15 or less.

The trees will be on sale on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. and during the week from 6 P.M. until 8 P.M. Since all trees are usually sold out by mid-December, the Knights would like to encourage everyone to buy theirs early, especially those who wish to buy the taller, premium trees. All proceeds go directly to several charities and organizations affiliated with the K of C and our parish. Any individuals considering joining the K of C or parishioners who wish to assist in selling trees should contact Mike Dromgoole (434-2515) or Paul Bartlett (437-2562).

Deacon’s pencil …

“Paul, faithful Jew or Apostate”

Many of the old traditional assumptions about Paul are so interrelated that changing any one of them immediately necessitates alterations in others. It has already been seen that in presuming that Paul had converted away from Judaism, one also then had to assert that Paul believed the Law (Torah) was no longer to be followed. That Paul’s previous life in Judaism had been one of enslavement to the harsh strictures and requirements of the Law. That one could only earn one’s salvation by performing works of the Law. That to follow the Law was a joyless and somber existence.

Indeed, Paul’s letters indicate the opposite viewpoint. In 1 Cor. 7:17-18 Paul insists that everyone should remain as they were before they became a follower of Jesus; Jews should not seek to become Gentiles and Gentiles should not seek to become Jews. Furthermore, it seems that Paul himself remained a Torah-observant Jew throughout his lifetime.

While Paul is absolutely convinced that Gentiles (non-Jews) need not follow the Jewish Torah to be saved, he believed that Jews who came to believe in Jesus as the Christ were expected to continue living by the Torah. For Paul the Torah was not a burden to be endured, but an expression of divine grace.
